NEW WINDSOR, N.Y., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A small aerobatic plane crashed Friday while practicing for an air show in New York, killing the pilot, officials said.

The plane crashed around 2 p.m. local time at Stewart International Airport in New Windsor. The pilot was preparing for the New York Air Show to be held this weekend.

A county official confirmed to WABC in New York that the pilot was killed. It was not immediately clear if anyone on the ground was injured.

Aviation journalist Benjamin Granucci was taking photographs of the aircraft -- which he described as a single-engine Giles G-202 -- when it crashed.

"What I saw was the aircraft come in for a dive. As it pulled up, it suddenly crossed the crowd line and spun towards the ground," he said on Twitter.

Granucci also tweeted an image of the aircraft with what appeared to be a broken tail. He deleted the image less than an hour after posting it.
