NEW YORK, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- A water main leak under the intersection at Fifth Avenue and 64th Street in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood is possibly to blame for a sinkhole that opened up Tuesday morning, officials said.

The crater measured about 20 feet wide and 20 feet deep and developed around 7 a.m. local time. Authorities told WABC-TV in New York a 48-inch water main was leaking underground in the area and may have caused the sinkhole.

No injuries were reported.

Water service was cut off in the area and was expected to be down for a while. Meanwhile, Fifth Avenue was shut down between 63rd and 65th streets, and 65th Street was closed between Fifth and Sixth avenues.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority said no subway service would be affected.

A nearby resident told WCBS-TV in New York that many residents had complained to officials recently that the ground at the intersection appeared to be sinking.

"There's a lot of different agencies that have been involved or contacted and none of them want to take any action," the woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
