NEW YORK, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- This wasn't The Apprentice. This was life imitating art.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump -- whose campaign has gained considerable momentum in recent weeks -- fired one of his staffers for what he called racially offensive posts on Facebook.

Trump's camp identified the staffer as political adviser Sam Nunberg.

"Effective immediately, Sam Nunberg, a low-level political adviser, is no longer associated with the Donald Trump for President campaign," campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said.

Apparently, Nunberg had written racially insensitive posts on his personal Facebook account years ago, Bloomberg and the Washington Post reported -- with some dating back to 2007.

In one post on Nunberg's account, a racial slur was used to refer to the Rev. Al Sharpton's daughter. In another, President Barack Obama was called a "Socialist Marxist Islamo Fascist Nazi Appeaser" -- and his 2009 inauguration was referred to as a "hip hop inaugral [sic] ball."

Nunberg told CNN that he didn't author the comments -- saying, "anything that was posted under my name does not mean I posted it."

"I am not adept at social media," he added. "I have a long record of working with diverse people. And anything you are reporting on does not reflect anything on Mr. Trump or Mr. Trump's campaign. I would also point out that all of these things were done before Mr. Trump's campaign, if I even did them -- which I deny.

"In any event, this is the problem with politics ... Politics as usual is wrong."

The controversial posts had been removed from the account by Sunday afternoon.

"They were offensive, and they do not reflect Mr. Trump's position, and we take them very seriously," Lewandowski said Friday. "If it determined that Mr. Nunberg made these statements then he will no longer be part of the campaign."

Nunberg, an attorney, claims on his LinkedIn profile that he supported Republican Mitt Romney's candidacy in 2008.

Early last year, Nunberg was fired by Trump for persuading the real estate magnate to participate in what turned out to be an unflattering profile story by the news website Buzzfeed -- only to be rehired once Trump kicked off his presidential campaign.

According to Politico, Nunberg slammed the Buzzfeed story once he was fired -- but applauded it before he was dismissed by Trump.
