FBI investigating suspicious packages sent to Oregon sheriffs

SALEM, Ore., July 28 (UPI) -- The Federal Bureau of Investigations is among several law enforcement agencies trying to determine the source of suspicious packages, some with " an unknown substance," sent to sheriff's offices in Oregon statewide on Monday.

The Oregon State Police said multiple sheriff's offices received suspicious packages. Investigators said at least 10 letters appeared to be sent from the same source. Some are saying up to 20 locations received the packages. The U.S. Postal Service is also assisting in the investigation.

"As a reminder people receiving suspicious packages or mail should be cautious of mail that has excessive postage, no return address, excessive tape to secure parcel, misspelled words, misspelled title with name, incorrect or title only, strange odors, and oily stains, discolorations, [or] crystallization on packaging," state police said in a written statement.

Among those who received suspicious packages was Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmerand two others, who were taken to the hospital Monday after Palmer opened an envelope addressed to him and found a white substance. He developed a rash, but was released within a few hours.

Several government buildings were shutdown for hours after packages were received, including the correctional facility next to the Grant County Courthouse.
