SURF CITY, N.C., July 6 (UPI) -- A shark attacked a Marine from Camp Lejeune while he was swimming off the North Carolina coast, sending the man to the hospital with multiple injuries, emergency officials said.

The 32-year-old Marine, whose name wasn't reported, was swimming Saturday near Surf City when he was bitten by the shark, an official from the base told WITN-TV in Greenville, N.C.

He was transported around 10:40 p.m. local time to the Naval Hospital where he was treated for injuries to his right hand and forearm. He was released five hours later.

It's unclear where the attack took place and what type of shark was involved. Police in Surf City told WWAY-TV in Wilmington, N.C., they didn't receive any reports of a shark bite and so were unable to confirm the location of the incident.

This marks the eighth shark attack in North Carolina in the past month.
