WASHINGTON, May 28 (UPI) -- The elevator at the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., stopped working Thursday due to electrical problems.

The National Mall twitter account announced the closure with a post saying the tourist attraction would "reopen as soon as it's repaired."

The monument, which stands 554 feet tall, is currently closed to visitors. The elevator is the only way for tourists to reach the top of the structure because the stairs are closed to the general public.
