Georgia man pleads guilty in attempt to join Islamic State

ATLANTA, May 28 (UPI) -- A 37-year-old man who purchased an airplane ticket to Turkey from the Atlanta airport pleaded guilty to federal charges of attempt to join the Islamic State.

Leon Nathan Davis, of Augusta, Ga. faces up to 15 years in prison and a lifetime of probation on a charge of attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. He also faces a $25,000 fine.

The FBI said agents nabbed Davis in October 2014 at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport on parole violation stemming from a 2005 drug conviction. He had just purchased the airplane ticket to Turkey and was planning to be smuggled into Syria. Davis was under surveillance for more than a year, the FBI said,
