Drone crashes on Boston-area parade, two injured

By Amy R. Connolly

MARBLEHEAD, Mass., May 26 (UPI) -- A drone hovering above a Memorial Day parade lost control, hit a building and landed on a parade spectator's head.

Scot Yount suffered minor injures when the flying unmanned device hit his head. But he was worried about what could have happened had it hit his 1-year-old daughter. It also hit a woman, but she was not hurt.

"And then I heard people yell and felt this clunk on my head and the back of my neck," Yount told WBZ. "I realized I just got hit by the thing."

Police said the drone operator was "apologetic" and "embarrassed." No charges will be filed.

The drone operator "stated that he wanted to videotape the parade, and never imagined that this would have happened," the report said. "He reported that he has flown this drone numerous times without ever having a negative experience. He explained that it was poor judgment, and wouldn't be flying the drone over Marblehead again."

Drone use has exploded in popularity in the past several years, leaving some worried about the consequences of leaving them unregulated. Recently, the Federal Aviation Administration reminded the public that everything within a 15-mile radius of Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., is a "No Drone Zone." This came after a Florida man piloted a gyrocopter onto the lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Drones have also been spotted in areas in Paris, causing alarm.
