NEW YORK, May 4 (UPI) -- A New York police officer shot in the head Saturday morning died from his injuries Monday, Police Commissioner William Bratton said.

Officer Brian Moore, 25, was shot in the face Saturday in Queens Village after he and his partner stopped their vehicle to question a man. As they pulled the unmarked vehicle up behind the man, he turned and fired at the vehicle three times.

Moore sustained injuries to his brain and his family took him off life support Monday.

Bratton called Moore "an extraordinary young man" and said his death was "a great loss to this profession and to this city."

An hour after the shooting, officers apprehended Demetrius Blackwell, whom they say lived on the same block. Police on Sunday charged Blackwell, 35, with attempted murder, assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Blackwell's charges would be upgraded to first-degree murder.

Moore had been on the force for five years and had 150 arrests under his belt.

"As a member of the NYPD, Officer Moore put the safety of his fellow New Yorkers before his own, and we will remember his service with gratitude and pride," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. "I join with all New Yorkers in mourning his passing and send my deepest condolences to his friends and family."
