Guard dies after shooting at U.S. Census Bureau; suspect arrested after chase

SUITLAND, Md., April 9 (UPI) -- A suspect accused of fatally shooting a guard at the U.S. Census Bureau headquarters in Suitland, Md., was apprehended after a chase in Washington, D.C.

The incident started Thursday evening when the gunman used his vehicle to ram into the gates outside the Census Bureau's headquarters, NBC Washington reported.

A security guard, later identified as Lawrence Buckner, was shot. He died later Thursday evening.

Police indicated the guard was chasing a suspect when he was shot.

Reporters on the scene said they heard a serious of loud noises inside the building. It's unclear if those noises were from flash-bang grenades or gunshots.

Initial reports indicated the suspect may have been barricaded inside the Census Bureau campus, though authorities said the suspect was apprehended after a chase that culminated in the H Street commercial corridor.

An officer was injured in the leg during the confrontation in the District, though it's unclear how. The chase ended when the suspect was shot in the head. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier told The Washington Post the suspect did not die.

The FBI launched an investigation into the incident.
