Brutus, quadruple amputee dog, walks on prosthetic limbs

By Andrew V. Pestano

LOVELAND, Colo., March 29 (UPI) -- Two-year old Rotteweiler Brutus received a quadruple amputation after suffering from frostbite but can now walk again after being fitted with prosthetic limbs.

The Loveland, Colo., canine is the second known dog to have four prosthetic limbs after he was outfitted with two rear prosthetics in September and front prosthetics almost two months later.

"He's able to walk in them. It's not always pretty. We want to be able to give him a higher function, where he can run and play with other dogs, go on hikes," Laura Aquilina, Brutus's foster mom, said. "You can't explain to an animal why you are putting these contraptions on their feet. You can't explain to them, that it's to help them."

Brutus' paws were amputated by his breeder, after all four were frostbitten.

The artificial limbs were made by OrthoPets, a company that makes prosthetic limbs for about 250 animals worldwide each year.

"Brutus is an amazing case of a beautiful dog who was dealt a short hand," Martin Kauffman, founder of OrthoPets, said.

Brutus will receive new and improved prosthetics and will be undergoing physical therapy at the veterinarian hospital at Colorado State University.
