KENAI, Alaska, March 26 (UPI) -- Remains belonging to two people found on an Alaskan trail last weekend belong to members of a family of four who went missing in the area in May 2014, police said Thursday.

Officials identified the bodies of 23-year-old Rebecca Adams and her boyfriend, 37-year-old Brandon Jividen, a news release from the Kenai Police Department said.

Adams and Jividen's bodies were discovered Saturday, along with those of two others and a dog. Kenai police believe the other two bodies belong to Adams' children, Jaracca Hundley, 3, and Michelle Hundley, 5. Police are awaiting DNA results to confirm the identities of the children.

The police department said it could take several weeks for the final report from the Alaska Medical Examiner's office to be completed.

The family and their dog, Sparks, were last seen at their apartment in Kenai, a port town of 7,000 southwest of Anchorage in May. Their sudden disappearance launched one of the Kenai Peninsula's biggest manhunts, and was centered in an area northwest of the city, near the location of a correctional facility.

A person driving on a trail northeast of the town found the remains Saturday and called police. The bodies were located in a privately owned field near Wildwood Correctional Facility.

Law enforcement officials also said personal property belonging to the family, including a gun that went missing from the apartment, was found at the site.

"From the very beginning, we have worked closely with the families to help resolve and bring solace to this horrible tragedy," the Kenai Police Department said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with them. It is also important that we help to bring some closure to friends and our entire community; we have all been impacted by these four deaths."
