'Animal House' fraternity inspiration at Dartmouth allegedly branded initiates

HANOVER, N.H., March 25 (UPI) -- The fraternity that served as a partial inspiration for the movie Animal House, Dartmouth College's Alpha Delta, is under investigation for allegedly branding students as part of initiation.

The college issued a statement Wednesday saying the fraternity was already under suspension through March 29 when new allegations that students' flesh was being branded were made in the fall.

"Dartmouth is strengthening and extending the terms of AD's current suspension pending the outcome of the disciplinary process," the statement read.

Should the allegations prove to be true, the organization could face probation, further suspension or permanent loss of recognition for the fraternity at the college.

Alpha Delta "has a significant three-year history of disciplinary violations, including hazing, underage service of alcohol and hosting unregistered events," the school said.

The news comes as multiple Greek organizations across the country face growing criticism and punishments for a variety of offenses.

Penn State's Kappa Delta Rho faces a police investigation over a Facebook page that allegedly depicted images of nude, unconscious women. The University of Oklahoma earlier this month shuttered the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity after a video came out showing some of its members singing a racist song.

Meanwhile, Dartmouth earlier this year banned hard liquor on campus and told fraternities to clean up their act or be disbanded in an effort to address the rampant party culture that had been closely associated with the problem of sexual assault on campus.
