POINT REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE , Calif., March 23 (UPI) -- One person is dead and one person is in the hospital after a cliff collapsed while they were hiking on the coast of California.

Two hikers were on the Bear Valley Trail at Point Reyes National Seashore when the cliff at Arch Rock collapsed underneath them.

The trail was closed to hikers due to danger and it is unknown why they were there.

"We just put up warning signs this past Thursday and Friday," said park spokesman John Dell'Osso. "I can't tell you why somebody would walk past those signs and not pay any attention to them."

The hiker was identified as a 58-year-old woman from San Francisco -- her name has not been released.

The second hiker, whose identity has not been disclosed, is still in the hospital and being treated for injuries.
