CHARLESTON, S.C., March 5 (UPI) -- A total of 11 cadets have been suspended or dropped out of The Citadel military college during an ongoing hazing investigation that could involve up to 83 students.

School authorities said four students were either suspended or expelled from the school, considered a leading military college in the United States. Seven other students quit before their cases were heard.

Last month, school officials announced 83 cadets have been accused of wrongdoing since school started in August. Navy Capt. Geno Paluso, The Citadel's commandant of cadets, said of those, 39 cases were determined to be lesser infractions and two were dropped.

Paluso said he expects additional cadets to leave the school as the investigation continues.

"We're not going to tolerate it, we're not going to put up with it," he said.

Hazing has long been a problem at The Citadel. The school endorses Hell Week to indoctrinate freshmen, called knobs, and its "Fourth Class System," designed to toughen up first years through rigorous physical and mental demands.
