Snow expected to pound Northeast as latest winter storm moves in

The heaviest snow and ice from the winter storm is expected to affect states in the Northeast on Sunday into Monday night.

NEW YORK, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- A winter storm moving east from the Great Lakes is expected to drop heavy snows in the northeastern United States Sunday night into Monday and Tuesday.

The system, called Winter Strom Marcus by the Weather Channel, began on Friday in northern Minnesota to the northern Great Lakes and was affecting areas of upstate New York and New England by Saturday night into early Sunday, dropping up to 6 inches of snow in some areas.

The heaviest snow and ice from the storm is expected to drop late Sunday into Monday night in the Northeast, including in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Winter storm warnings have been issued across the region, lasting until Tuesday morning, and schools in Boston and other areas are scheduled for closure Monday and Tuesday.

The National Weather Service forecasts of up to 24 inches of snow in portions of Massachusetts and between 9 and 18 inches in upstate New York on Monday.

The winter storm is the latest of several that have barreled through to the Northeast in the last month.
