WASHINGTON, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton joined the vaccination debate Monday by tweeting #vaccineswork in defense of vaccinations.

The probable 2016 presidential candidate voiced her opinion as it gained traction among politicians. Fellow potential candidates Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Republican Gov. Chris Christie both voiced their support for letting parents decide whether or not they want to vaccinate their children.

President Barack Obama told NBC he supports the vaccination of all children to prevent outbreaks.

The debate has gotten particularly charged recently as the anti-vaccination movement has been cited as the cause behind a measles outbreak in the United States -- a disease once considered mostly eradicated.

Anti-vaccination advocates believe vaccines can lead to autism and other disorders. The myth has sustained despite numerous scientific statements to the contrary.

Clinton came on the side of the scientists saying in social media fashion, #vaccineswork and #GrandmothersKnowBest.

The science is clear: The earth is round, the sky is blue, and #vaccineswork. Let's protect all our kids. #GrandmothersKnowBest
