The boy's two-year-old sister who was also in the room was unharmed. The father has been released from the hospital and the mother is in stable condition.

The father, Justin Reynolds, said he and his girlfriend, Monique Villescas, were about to order a pizza when he heard a gunshot.

"The next minute I realized my girlfriend was bleeding," Reynolds told NBC News station KOB. "Then I sat down and realized I was shot too." He called 911 right away.

The children are now under the care of the state and the parents could face negligence charges.

The incident comes after at least three deaths within a week caused by children inadvertently finding guns in January and the death of a 29-year-old mother shot by her 2-year-old son at a Walmart late December.
