Gas pipeline explodes near Mississippi reservoir

JACKSON, Miss., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- A gas pipeline exploded early Wednesday near Mississippi's largest reservoir, setting woods in the area on fire.

Bob Wedgeworth. head of emergency operations for Rankin County, reported no injuries or damage to buildings.

People living in the area reported their houses shook shortly after 6 a.m. because of the explosion. Flames could be seen shooting into the air.

The pipeline runs near the Ross Barnett Reservoir, which supplies drinking water to Mississippi's capital, Jackson. It is operated by GulfSouth Pipeline.

GulfSouth had shut down the line by about 7:30 a.m., and firefighters were waiting for the gas to bleed off, officials said.
