LAS VEGAS, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Outgoing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., spent New Year's Night in a hospital after breaking ribs and facial bones while working out, his staff said.

The 75-year-old Reid fell after a piece of equipment broke as he worked out in his home in Henderson, a Las Vegas suburb, his office said in a statement. He ended up with broken bones in his face and three cracked ribs. And aide told the LA Times the equipment that broke was a resistance band.

Members of Reid's Capitol Police security detail took him to a hospital and he was then transferred to the University Medical Center in Las Vegas. Doctors there hospitalized him overnight as a precaution, though they expect him to make a full recovery.

Reid plans to be back in Washington for the beginning of the new congressional session, his office said. With Republicans holding a majority in the Senate, he will become minority leader.

In 2011, Reid dislocated a shoulder and suffered a black eye while jogging in Washington. He returned to work quickly with his arm in a sling.
