TARPON SPRINGS, Fla., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A veteran of the local police force in Tarpon Springs, Florida, was shot and killed in the wee hours of Sunday morning. The shooter was apprehended shortly after when his vehicle struck a pole and another car as he was pursued by backup patrol cars in a getaway attempt.

The deceased, 45-year-old Charles Kondek, was a 17-year veteran of the Tarpon Springs Police Department. He frequently handled the midnight shift. Before his time in Tarpon Springs, Kondek served five year as a New York City Police officer.

Kondek was transported to a local hospital but died shortly afterwards. He leaves behind five children.

The police officer was apparently responding to a noise complaint. Those who were within earshot of the shooting said the commotion was frightening.

Rickie and Carolyn Barnes told the Tampa Bay Times that they were startled after being awoken by the gunshots.

"It's very strange," Carolyn, 61, told the paper. "This place is so peaceful. It's just quiet and friendly. The neighbors are great. It's just hard to believe."

Police haven't given any additional details on the shooter or his motives, other than to confirm the suspect as a male. The police department is planning to hold a press conference Sunday afternoon.
