"It’s not something you can be proud of, but I'm happy the way it turned out," says boy's grandfather.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C., Dec. 18 (UPI) -- One man is dead and another behind bars after the pair attempted to rob an elderly couple in rural North Carolina, but were stopped when the couple's 14-year-old grandson opened fire.

According to police, 18-year-old Icai Delcid and 22-year-old Carlos Deldcid broke into the home of George and Ann Marie Wyant Tuesday night through separate entrances. Upon noticing Icai, the Wyants' grandson warned he was armed, attempting to dispel the intrusion.

"He was halfway in the window," Ann Marie Wyant reportedly told the 911 operator after the shooting.

"My grandson told him to stop and get out of here and he didn't so my grandson shot him ... Somebody just broke in the house and we shot him."

The teenager shot George Wyant's Glock 380 three times at Delcid, fatally striking him with at least one bullet.

"It's not something you can be proud of," a somber George Wyant told WSB-TV. "But, I'm happy the way it turned out."

Carlos attempted to flee amid the commotion but was apprehended with relative ease as he was wearing an ankle monitor, part of the terms of his probation for twice breaking into the same house in September and October.

Tuesday's attempted robbery is not the family's first brush with gun violence. In 2008, the Wyants' son-in-law and father of the 14-year-old was shot and killed outside his automotive business. Three years later the boy's older brother was ordered into counseling after using two loaded guns in an attempt to hijack a school bus.

The Wyants' grandson says he is coping well, but had trouble sleeping in the aftermath of the incident.

"I only got three hours of sleep but I guess I'm not doing horrible," he told WBTV.
