Nor'easter tramples travelers, leaves hundreds of thousands without power

Hundreds of flights canceled, thousands more delayed.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- A winter storm that dropped heavy rain and snow across the eastern U.S. has caused Thanksgiving travel chaos as flights are grounded and roads remain treacherous.

More than 700 flights were canceled and more than 4,000 others delayed. Highways are hazardous heading into the busiest travel holiday of the year, and dozens of accidents have been reported in the Northeast.

More than 350,000 people along the East Coast were without power Thursday morning, with New Hampshire hit hardest, reporting some 180,000 electric customers in the dark. Central Maine Power Company reported more than 100,000 power outages.

Snow piled as high as 15 inches in some parts of Maine, 16.5 inches in New Hampshire, 16 inches in Vermont, 10 inches in Massachusetts, 12 inches in New York, 9 inches in New Jersey, 8 inches in Pennsylvania, 7 inches in Maryland, 19 inches in West Virginia, 8 inches in Virginia and 6 inches in North Carolina.

Thundersnow was reported in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In the Midwest, heavy winds sent a wintry mix of snow and rain sideways. Mountain snow is expected in the Rockies, with the worst of it north of the border in Canada.
