Officer shot, woman killed in Missouri burglary

The suspect, identified as Major Washington, 33, allegedly ran from the residence through the backyard.

UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- University City, Mo., police are searching for a suspect after an officer was shot and a woman died after gunfire was exchanged during an alleged burglary.

Police responded to a residence Monday night after receiving reports a man climbed through a window at the home and began shooting.

Det. Sgt. Fredrick Lemons told KSDK-TV, St. Louis, officers found a woman with a gunshot injury to her leg when they arrived at the residence. The woman, Donna Washington, 55, was transported to a hospital where she died.

One of the responding officers was shot in the chest and returned fire.

The suspect, identified as Major Washington, 33, allegedly ran from the residence through the backyard. Police were still searching for the man Tuesday.

He was described as having medium build, light complexion and dreadlocks. He is considered armed and dangerous.

The injured officer, whose name wasn't reported, was in serious but stable condition at a local hospital.
