TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Frahan "Ronny" Ahmed, the first person shot by Myron May during his shooting spree on Thursday at Florida State University's library, is paralyzed from the waist down, the victim's family confirmed Tuesday.

"Ronny was the first student shot, but despite his wounds was able to alert authorities in time for them to subdue his attacker," classmate Chase Roberts wrote on a fundraising site collecting money for Ahmed's medical expenses.

Over 19,000 supporters have raised more than $70,000 for Ahemd's medical bills and long-term expenses from the shooting. May shot Ahmed once in the mid-section, the bullet piercing his spinal chord.

"Ronny immediately knew that something was wrong because one of the bullets, one of the first bullets, struck his spine," described Ahmed's sister, Farhana.

"I know one of the first people on the scene were the police, who if not for their quick response, probably a lot more students would have gotten hurt. And Ronny himself probably was saved by the quickness of their actions."

Ahmed is enrolled in FSU's biomedical engineering program, and university president John Thrasher told local reporters the school is "100 percent committed" to seeing Ahmed through to graduation.
