PHOENIX, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A man is in critical condition, but alive, thanks to bystanders who came to his aid as he was fully engulfed in flames.

The unidentified man was taken to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix with burns on 80 to 90 percent of his body Thursday evening.

Lindsay Riedlinger, a manager at the Arby's on 35th and Glendale avenues, said she grabbed a fire extinguisher after customers came into the restaurant for help.

"He was just standing there," Riedlinger said. "He wasn't screaming, he wasn't yelling or anything. He just looked like in complete shock."

After the fire was out, the man walked into a Taco Bell and asked for water.

Phoenix Fire Department Spokesman Troy Caskey said Taco Bell employees called 911.

Caskey said the man would not tell officials how the fire started. They said they do not believe anyone was with him when he caught fire.
