A late surge in Democratic votes in Colorado's early voting wasn't enough to earn Udall a second term.

Udall initially won the Senate seat vacated by former U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard, a Republican, in 2008, beating out former U.S. Rep. Bob Schaffer. Prior to being elected to the Senate, Udall served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 10 years.

Gardner assumed office for Colorado's 4th congressional district in January 2011 after beating former U.S. Rep. Betsy Markey.

Both candidates were previously members of the Colorado House of Representatives.
