COCKEYSVILLE, Md., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Police in a Baltimore suburb may have thwarted a planned school attack during an investigation into a string of vehicle break-ins.

Baltimore County police officers on Saturday connected three vehicle break-ins in Cockeysville to a 16-year-old boy, whose name wasn't reported.

"When the boy was located and interviewed at his home in the Monkton area, officers learned that he had plans to go to Baltimore County Public Schools' George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology with two explosive devices and a gun, and that he wanted to kill people," a release from the Baltimore County Police Department said.

The teenager allegedly showed police a handgun and what police believed to be explosive devices. A hazardous devices team was brought in and the explosives were "rendered safe," the release said.

"The boy was sent for an emergency evaluation," the release continued. "He has been charged as a juvenile with several counts including possession of a destructive device, theft and a handgun violation."

Maria Lowery, the administrator in charge of Baltimore County Public Schools high schools, told the Baltimore Sun there were no "red flags" that alerted school staff to the student's alleged intentions.

"At this point, nothing has been shared with us [from the school] to give us any indication that this could have happened," she said. "We had no reason to suspect we had an issue."

A school shooting at another Baltimore County Public School, Perry Hall High School, left one student injured two years ago. In February, 2013, then-15-year-old Robert Gladden was sentenced to 35 years in prison for shooting fellow student Daniel Borowy.
