URBANA, Md., Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Drivers headed to work Friday morning in Maryland got a payday bonus when a bag of cash fell out the back of an armored truck on Interstate 270.

The door of a GardaWorld truck came open on the road near Urbana around 8 a.m., dropping the money into the fast lane.

Maryland State Police said the road was blocked for about 20 minutes by stopped cars.

"There was no crash. Cash was strewn across the interstate, but was quickly picked up by all the motorists who immediately stopped," said police spokesman Greg Shipley.

When a firetruck arrived, people who had stopped to grab the money drove away. "There wasn't much to pick up" by the time state troopers arrived, Shipley said.

Shipley said the driver realized his door had opened, likely because of a malfunction, and was looking for a way to pull over and stop.

"By the time he gets over, cash is floating through the air," Shipley said. "Most, if not all the vehicles suddenly stopped with people's hands raised in the air."

Officials said people who took the cash need to return it to the state police barracks in Frederick.

"If you picked it up and turn it in, you're being a good citizen," Shipley said. If not, you could face theft charges.
