WASHINGTON, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- John Spinello, the inventor of the game Operation, has raised enough funds trough crowdrise to pay for a surgery he needs, but can't afford.

Spinello, who invented the game in the 60s but is currently struggling to make ends meet financially, reached the $25,000 goal needed to cover the expenses of his oral procedure sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday thanks to an online fundraiser set up by fellow game inventors Tim Walsh and Peggy Brown.

"We launched this Crowdrise fundraiser to call on anyone who has ever played and loved Operation to send John a note and maybe, a monetary gift of appreciation," Walsh and Brown wrote on the crowdrise website.

Those who wanted to get involved could also leave messages of encouragement on the website ILoveOperation.com.

Spinello invented an electric skill game in which players have to insert a metal wand into circles without hitting the border in 1964. According to the crowdrise website, he sold the rights to a game invention company for $500 and his creation was eventually licensed to Milton Bradley who went on to create Operation.
