FORT CAMPBELL, Ky., Oct. 30 (UPI) -- A Halloween display featuring a hanged black family has been removed from a home at Fort Campbell after it was deemed offensive.

Clarksvillenow.com received a photo of what appears to be a black family hanging from trees with one person wearing an indecipherable sign and a child with a knife in its back.

Base spokeswoman Brendalyn Carpenter said officials were notified of the display and the family has taken it down.

"Displays of an offensive nature are not reflective of Army values and the family-friendly environment provided for employees and residents of the Fort Campbell community," she said.

The right-wing group Modern American Revolution defended the display on Facebook, saying it was only meant to depict a scene from the 2012 horror film Sinister.

"In it, a WHITE family had been killed by their possessed child," they wrote. "So, anyone who tries to say this is racist is wrong. Since the gentleman is an active duty soldier living on a federal military installation, he has no 1st Amendment rights. Living on post is VERY different than living off post. ...End of story!"
