PLACER COUNTY, Calif., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- A Placer County sheriff's deputy was shot and killed in the line of duty Friday, exactly 26 years after his sheriff's deputy father was killed in the line of duty.

Deputy Michael David Davis Jr. was investigating a suspect vehicle after the fatal shooting of Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy Danny Oliver outside a Motel 6.

Amid an hours-long manhunt that involved multiple carjackings, Davis approached a suspicious vehicle with his partner, and Marcelo Marquez, 34, is suspected of opening fire. Davis was killed, while his partner was shot in the arm.

Davis Jr.'s father, Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Michael David Davis, died Oct. 24, 1988 in a helicopter crash during a narcotics task force operation.

Marquez was taken into custody with a female suspect. He is accused in the shooting deaths of two deputies, injuring a third deputy and injuring a civilian.

"I think there's those people who would say, 'Well, you know what? I wish you had killed him,'" Sheriff Edward Bonner said "Nah. That's not who we are. We are not him. We did our job. I'm incredibly proud of the men and women who go out there every day and put their life on the line."
