Marysville Police Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux told reporters, "We are confident that there was only one shooter and that the shooter is dead."

Family confirmed to KIRO the shooter was freshman Jaylen Fryberg, described as a member of prominent family of the Tulalip tribe, a wrestler and an avid hunter.

At a 1 p.m. press conference, Lamoureux confirmed two dead, the shooter and one other person. He would not confirm whether the second fatality was a student or staff member. He also confirmed student reports that the shooting occurred in the cafeteria.

He said police have completed their first sweep of the school buildings, and were in the process of conducting a second, grid search of the campus.

Providence Regional Hospital in Everett confirmed to CBS that three patients had arrived with gunshot wounds, and a fourth victim, a male, was taken from PMC to Harborview Medical Center with wounds to the jaw that were "not immediately life-threatening."

Joanne Roberts, chief medical officer at PMC, said the three victims, two females and a male, were taken into surgery and were in critical condition. At 1:30 p.m., two were still in surgery and one had come out of surgery and was moved to the intensive care unit.

She said all three victims had "primary" head wounds, as well as secondary injuries elsewhere, and described all four victims as "young."

The male at Harborview was described as 14-years old and in serious condition.

Video by local CBS station KIRO 7 showed students evacuating the building with their hands up as emergency workers loaded them onto buses. Some students fled campus, while others were told to seek shelter in classrooms.

Parents were instructed to meet their children at a nearby church.

Tweets from students inside the school during the shooting described a student entering the cafeteria and firing four to six shots into the crowded lunchroom.

Police said officers were going room-by-room to clear the building, and Ayn Dietrich-WIlliams, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Seattle, said agents were on their way to the school. "The Marysville Pilchuck High School is currently in lockdown due to an emergency situation," the school district said in a statement. "Police and emergency services have responded. The Marysville School District lockdown procedures will remain in effect at Marysville Pilchuck until further notice from law enforcement. We will continue to forward communication in cooperation with law enforcement."
