LUMBERTON, N.C., Oct. 24 (UPI) -- A North Carolina grandfather managed to halt a home invasion in progress when he fired back at a trio of armed men who broke into his home Monday night.

The 67-year-old grandfather fired at the intruders, killing one, and injuring the other two, Robeson County Sheriff's officials said.

According to Maj. Anthony Thompson of the sheriff's office, Brandon Carver Stephens, Jamar Hawkins and Jamie Lee Faison knocked on the door of the grandfather's Lumberton home around 10 p.m. They were armed, dressed in black clothes and ski masks, and shoved their way into the house and demanded money.

The men ordered the grandfather and his wife to open a safe at the back of the house, and attempted to rape their 19-year-old granddaughter, Thompson said.

That's when the grandfather was able to reach his gun, shooting at all three suspects. They fired back, hitting the grandfather several times.

Officials said the grandfather was transported to Southeastern Regional Medical Center and later airlifted to another medical facility, where he remains in critical condition.

McLeod Hospital in Dillon notified police when two men turned up suffering gunshot wounds. Information from the suspects led them to the grandfather's stolen gold Cadillac, where they found Faison, 20, dead from his injuries.
