FRANKFORT, Ky., Oct. 22 (UPI) -- The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is buying airtime in Kentucky with the hope of helping candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes win her neck and neck race with current incumbent, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, after new polls suggest a potential upset is possible.

The race has been a close one from the gate, with Grimes taking the lead by two points earlier this month after trailing McConnell in August, according to polls.

Former Secretary of State and likely 2016 candidate Hillary Clinton even showed up in Louisville to stump for Grimes in recent weeks.

"Alison is the right leader at the right time with the right plan to deliver for Kentucky's hard-working families," Clinton told the Kentucky International Convention Center.

But the DSCC said as recently as last week it had no plans to purchase further ad time for Grimes until the day of the election, which some took as a sign Democrats were conceding the race.

In light of new polling that shows Grimes as still competitive, however, Washington Democrats have decided to dig deeper for ad funding the DSCC told Politico Wednesday.

McConnell was up by only one point in a recent Courier-Journal/Survey USA poll and the DSCC claimed their personal polling indicates undecided voters are leaning toward Grimes.

Whether the $650,000 in airtime for ads will give Grimes the boost she needs to oust the minority leader and help Democrats maintain their narrow majority in the Senate remains to be seen, but DSCC's decision to throw more money at Grimes' campaign is demonstrative of Democrats' belief in her realistic chances for a win.
