WASHINGTON, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- The FBI confirmed Tuesday that three missing American teenagers from Colorado were located in Germany, where they were supposedly en route to join the Islamic State, although their intended final destination was not shared.

"FBI Denver Division is aware of the situation and assisted with bringing the individuals back to Denver," said FBI spokeswoman Suzie Payne. "The juveniles are safe and reunited with their families," she added.

The FBI did not elaborate on the teens' intended destination, or whether they will face charges.

The Voice of America reported on Sunday that three teenage girls had been stopped at Frankfurt Airport, where one of the girls allegedly told German authorities "We are going to Turkey to study."

The identities of the minors have not been released but two are sisters, ages 15 and 16, of ethnic Somali origin. The third girl, whose age is not known, is of Sudanese heritage.

Colorado experienced a similar incident in April when 19-year-old Shannon Maureen Conley, of Arvada, was arrested at Denver International Airport attempting to leave the country to join the Islamic State.
