WASHINGTON, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- President Barack Obama admitted he too knows the embarrassment of having a credit card declined after trying to pay for a meal in a restaurant in New York.

It happened in September when he took the first lady out to eat while he was in town for the United Nations General Assembly.

"My credit card was rejected," he said at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Friday. "Fortunately, Michelle had hers."

Obama was there to sign an executive order intended to protect Americans from credit card fraud and identity theft.

The president attributed the credit card mishap to its lack of use. He is not allowed to carry his wallet for security reasons.

"No -- I really think that I've been paying my bills," he told the waitress.
