PORT ORANGE, Fla., Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A Florida man took his own life early Friday after shooting his three children, killing two, following a fight with his estranged wife.
The dead were identified as David Mohney, 52, and his children, Savanna, 14, and David ,11. Lauren Mohney, 9, was critically injured.
Volusia County sheriff's deputies said gunfire was heard from a house in Port Orange, near Daytona Beach, after Cynthia Mohney, 48, ran to a neighbor's home and said her husband had been threatening her with a gun when an argument escalated.
Another neighbor said she was wakened at about 5 a.m. by loud screams.
"I woke up to the screams of, 'Oh my God, oh my God, this isn't happening here. This isn't happening,'" the woman, who did not want her name used, told WFTV. "I only heard screaming. That's all I heard."
The TV station reported the couple were in the midst of a divorce.
Sheriff Ben Johnson said there had been previous trouble at the house.
"If he wants to commit suicide let him commit suicide, but to shoot his children, that is cowardly," Johnson told reporters at a news conference.
