Bill O'Reilly and Jon Stewart debate 'white privilege'

"If you live in a neighborhood where poverty is endemic, it's harder to work hard. It's harder to get an education," said Stewart.

NEW YORK, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Fox News host Bill O'Reilly made an appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where he and Stewart got into a debate over the validity of "white privilege."

The conversation comes after O'Reilly said on his show The O'Reilly Factor that he did not believe in "white privilege" or the inherent socio-economic advantage whites have over other races because of their skin color.

O'Reilly said the idea of "white privilege" is discounted by the fact that Asian-Americans make more money than white Americans.

The two then debated the residual effects of the slavery and the Jim Crow laws that Stewart argued have led to white people setting up a system where they are at an advantage and people of color are at a disadvantage.

O'Reilly said he believed the U.S. was past that and every race is on an even footing now to succeed.

"America is now a place where if you work hard, get educated and are an honest person, you can succeed," he told Stewart.

"If you live in a neighborhood where poverty is endemic, it's harder to work hard. It's harder to get an education," Stewart countered.

Stewart tried to drive his point home telling O'Reilly race is a "factor" in the socio-economic disadvantage for African-Americans.

"I'll call it this, and I think it's a word you'll understand. It's a factor," said Stewart.

It was a point to which O'Reilly conceded.
