ST. LOUIS, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Police in the St. Louis metropolitan area are dealing with yet another police-involved fatal shooting, this time in the city proper.

The St. Louis Police Department said an off-duty officer shot and killed a suspect around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 4100 block of Shaw Blvd.

St. Louis Police Lt. Col. Alfred Adkins said the incident happened when the off-duty officer, who was working in security, approached four men.

"As [the officer] exited the car, the gentlemen took off running. He was able to follow one of them before he lost him and then found him again as the guy jumped out of some bushes across the street. The officer approached, they got into a struggle, they ended up into a gangway, at which time the young man pulled a weapon and shots were fired. The officer returned fire and unfortunately the young man was killed," Adkins told KMOV-TV, St. Louis.

Neither the officer nor the suspect were identified.

A crowd gathered at the scene said the dead man was in his 20s and was shot 16 times. They said he was unarmed and only held a sandwich.

Some of the crowd chanted "hands up don't shoot," and "stop we don't want racist police," in reference to the shooting of Michael Brown two months ago in Ferguson, Mo., about 12 miles northwest of St. Louis.
