Police: Eric Frein described shooting a state trooper in note

Pennsylvania State Police did not "pick this fight" with Eric Frein, "but it is ours to finish," Lt. Col. George Bivens said at a news conference.

BLOOMING GROVE, Pa., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Eric Frein, in a note, described shooting a Pennsylvania state trooper, saying he was surprised how quickly his victim "dropped," a state police official said Wednesday.

At a news conference, Lt. Col. George Bivens described some of the evidence found in the hunt for Frein and read from some notes allegedly left by the suspect. Bivens said the notes included details that would have been known only to the shooter.

State police and the FBI have been combing an area in the Pocono Mountains in northeast Pennsylvania for more than three weeks. Frein was identified as the suspect two days after a gunman shot two troopers in an ambush outside the Blooming Grove barracks, killing Cpl. Bryon Dickson II and wounding Trooper Alex Douglass.

"Friday, Sept. 12, got a shot around 11 and took it. He dropped. I was surprised how quick," Bivens read. "I took a follow-up shot at his head and neck area. He was still and quiet after that."

Frein's Jeep was found in a retaining pool not far from the barracks. Bivens said another note described the crash as "disaster."

"I can only describe Eric Frein's actions as pure evil," Bivens. "Every so often true evil rears its ugly head and we must deal with it."

The notes do not suggest that Frein targeted particular troopers, instead suggesting he was aiming at police in general, Bivens said. He said investigators fear that if Frein remains on the loose he may strike again.

"Whether that next victim is another trooper or a member of the community, that cannot be allowed to occur," he said, adding that state police "did not pick this fight, but it is ours to finish."

A law enforcement officer saw a man believed to be Frein at a distance of about 150 to 200 yards Tuesday, Bivens said, one of four suspected sightings in the past few days. Pursuers lost their target in the thick woods.

Frein, 31, was on the shooting team in high school. He later became involved in military re-enactments and had an apparent obsession with the Serbian military.
