HAMDEN, Conn., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Gov. Chris Christie, a lifelong New Jersey resident, trails Hillary Clinton by 10 percentage points in the state in a theoretical presidential matchup.

Clinton gets a big boost from the gender gap, the Quinnipiac University poll said. While Clinton trails Christie by 3 points among New Jersey men, she would get 56 percent of the female vote to 36 percent for Christie.

Overall, 50 percent of voters said they would choose Clinton and 40 percent Christie. Independent voters go for Clinton 46 percent to 40 percent.

Christie, however, does far better against Clinton in the state than some other potential Republican candidates. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky both trail Clinton by 20 points, with Clinton getting more than 60 percent of the women's vote against either.

"The adopted daughter next door whips the native son when it comes to presidential politics in New Jersey," said Maurice Carroll, the poll's assistant director. "Gov. Christopher Christie gives former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton more of a battle in New Jersey, but a huge lead among women voters keeps the lady from Chappaqua, N.Y., ahead of the home- state governor."

Neither Christie nor Clinton has made any announcement about their 2016 plans, although both have been visiting key states.
