WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- On Tuesday, the Secret Service put up an extra barrier in front of the White House.

The agency -- charged with protecting the president and his family -- added the metal security fence as it continues to investigate how an Army veteran managed to jump the main fence and make it to the front door of the White House.

The fence adds an extra buffer zone in front of the existing iron fence that surrounds the White House.

In a statement, Ed Donovan a spokesman for the agency said, "This temporary closure is in effect while the Secret Service conducts a comprehensive review of the fence jumping incident which occurred on Friday September 19th."

The Secret Service did not say how long the barrier would be in place.
