NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- 1,000 green activists halted traffic on in New York's Financial District on Monday, leading to 100 arrests.

The protesters came with one message to Washington and Wall Street: Unrestrained capitalism is a major cause of climate change.

The arrests marked the end to an 11-hour march and protest -- called "Flood Wall Street." According to organizers the march had 3,000 participants at its peak.

One protester, Matthew McHale said, "came out here because I think, in order to address climate change, which is the most pressing issue facing humanity, that we actually need to change the system."

Monday's event came the day after 400,000 activists joined celebrities through midtown Manhattan.

On Tuesday, world leaders will meet at the U.N. headquarters to discuss climate change.

The marches are part of what's called Climate Week NYC, which will include over 100 other smaller events.
