ST. LOUIS, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, was the guest of honor Saturday night at the Starkloff Disability Institute's annual party in St. Louis.

Harkin was selected to receive the award for his work advocating for people with disabilities and for being one of the primary authors of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Starkloff Disability Institute said on its website.

"Tom Harkin is one of the strongest advocates for people with disabilities and he is tireless in his advocacy," said David Newburger, SDI co-director.  "As a U.S. Senator, he has sponsored nearly all of the most important bills and legislative amendments that have benefited people with disabilities over the last 18 years."

Harkin is set to retire from the Senate in January 2015.

Also in attendance at Saturday's "Party to the Max" was comedian and actress Maysoon Zayid, "who jokes about her global culture and life with cerebral palsy," the website said.
