Legal problems plagued family in Bell, Florida for years

The daughter killed by her father had been in jail on grand theft charges.

BELL, Calif., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- The family killed in Bell, Florida had long been plagued by legal problems.

It has now come to light that the daughter Don Spirit is said to have killed -- 28-year-old Sarah -- had legal problems. She had been convicted of grand theft in 2013. She was on supervised probation.

In Nov., 2001, Don Spirit accidentally killed his son 9-year-old son Kyle while hunting.

According to deputies in Gilchrist, Co., Spirit shot and killed his daughter and his six grandchildren before turning the gun on himself Thursday afternoon.

On Friday State Attorney Bill Cervone said "It is another screaming example of what a miserably bad combination that mental health problems — this guy must have had them — and guns or any sort of weapons pose."

In addition to the legal issues the Spirits experienced -- the father of three of the children killed Thursday-- Edward Kuhlmann -- is currently in the Calhoun Correctional Institution.

According to the Florida Department of Corrections Kuhlmann is scheduled to be released from prison in 2038.

The father of the other three children killed is also in jail facing charges.
