Census: number of Americans living in poverty down, still above 45 million

The Census Bureau announced Tuesday the poverty rate has declined for the first time since 2006; 45 million Americans still at or below poverty line.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The U.S. Census Bureau announced on Tuesday the number of Americans living in poverty has dropped for the first time since 2006.

According to the Census Bureau, the nation's official poverty rate in 2013 was 14.5 percent, down from 15.0 percent in 2012

However,more than 45 million people are still living at or below the poverty line.

Also released today, incomes for middle class Americans have shown no growth from 2012 to 2013. Those numbers haven't seen an increase in 30 years.

To break the numbers down further:

Hispanic communities saw the biggest changes. That group has the largest decline in poverty and the highest increase in incomes.

There is one age group that saw a large increase in household incomes, 15-24 year olds.

Women still earn 78 percent of what men do.
