The chairman of the foundation, Martin Nesbitt said the four universities have come "the farthest" in meeting the criteria and each have a "strong vision."

Nesbitt also said, "We look forward to working with each institution to further refine their proposals over the coming months, and to presenting our recommendations to the president and first lady early next year."

The foundation asked the universities to submit formal proposals by Dec. The Obamas are set to make their final selection by early 2015.
