BOULDER, Colo., Sept. 12 (UPI) -- It isn't even officially fall yet, but in some parts of the mountain states it's already acting like winter.

Snow falling in the north and central Rockies, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, and western Nebraska set records for the earliest measurable snowfall in some places.

In Rapid City, S.D., 1.6 inches on Thursday morning set a record, and even more fell in mountainous areas further west.

In Buffalo, Wyoming, 7-8 inches fell, and as much as 18 inches dropped in the Bighorn Mountains near Sheridan.

The 0.1 inch reported at the National Weather Service office in Boulder on Friday morning tied a record, set Sept. 12, 1974, as the earliest measured snowfall there since measurements began in 1906.

Snow also fell across Alberta, Canada, starting Wednesday as temperatures dropped below freezing.
