MIAMI, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A suspect in the killing of a wheelchair-bound panhandler in Miami was arrested after a high-speed chase, police said.

Rodney Louis, 26, was arrested after he crashed his car on Interstate 95. He allegedly shot Israel Zerquera in Miami on Tuesday morning.

Witnesses said a man driving a gold Chevrolet Malibu approached the area on I-95, pulled over and got out to shoot Zerquera, who was in his wheelchair near the exit ramp, and then drove off. An alert was issued for the car, and police officers spotted a gold Malibu a short time later.

Police said they pursued Louis through local streets and then to the interstate, where he headed north.

A relative who did not want her name used was near the spot where Zerquera was shot later in the day, selling water and hats.

"I do this," she told WTVJ-TV. "This is my job to sell water to help my family with our personal bills, but for the next few days, I'm going to be out here trying to help with funeral costs."
